MARVEL Reveals 2016 Event Series – AVENGERS: STANDOFF (Newsarama)

Marvel’s next big event will come in early 2016 with Avengers: Standoff!. Announced at New York Comic Con during the “Marvel: Iron Man & Avengers” panel, this new series kicks off in March with Standoff!: Assault On Pleasant Hill Alpha by Nick Spencer and Jesus Saiz. The story continues on in tie-in issues of Sam Wilson, Captain America; All-New, All-Different Avengers; Uncanny Avengers; New Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D; and other titles to be announced. According to Spencer, Avengers: Standoff! was originally conceived as a tribute to Captain America’s 75th Anniversary in 2016, and the three current and former Caps — Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes — will be the major focus of the book.

At last we have the first hints of where we can expect to see Bucky Barnes in the All-New All-Different Marvel Universe. He’ll be some kind of a major player in a new crossover series—the details of which are currently sparse—that will premiere in March.

The event concerns a dark secret—related to Steve Rogers’ past and almost certainly something to do with S.H.I.E.L.D.—hidden within the (not-so) idyllic community of Pleasant Hill, a slice of small-town America where the inhabitants are virtual prisoners and not happy about it.

Main writer Nick Spencer and Marvel VP Tom Brervoort sat down today for an interview about the series, but naturally couldn’t add much information at this early stage. They did hint that one of the Captain Americas might die in the event, though. So fans of Bucky, who have been watching him die over and over again across the face of Battleworld, could have reason to be concerned. After all, Bucky hasn’t been mentioned in connection with any of the All-New All-Different relaunches, and he doesn’t appear with Sam and Steve in the Avengers camp on the cover of Assault on Pleasant Hill Alpha. This might suggest that Bucky is actually one of the not-so-happy inhabitants of the town, an explanation that would account for his absence from the relaunch up until this point. Then again, his role might be something else entirely. (Although I do like the idea of a Bucky who’s leading an uprising…)

Only time will tell what surprises lie in store for us with this crossover. More details will follow as they become available.
